I launched my own business as an intercultural trainer and culture consultant in the US nearly a year ago. Throughout this journey, Iβve explored various avenues for growth, including social media, building my website, attending business fairs, and joining different networking groups.
One key lesson Iβve learned is that not all networking groups are equally valuable, and some may not be what they initially seem. Here are a few observations:
πΈ Social vs. Professional Groups: Some groups market themselves as professional or business-focused but often turn out to be primarily social gatherings. While these events might feature interesting talks and discussions, I haven't found them particularly effective for generating useful leads.
πΈ Challenging Connections: Iβve also encountered networking groups, particularly those dominated by corporate or male participants, where making meaningful connections proved difficult. This isnβt about gender bias, but rather a reflection of the limited interest in my specific business within these groups.
πΈ Preferred Formats: Iβve found greater value in informal round-table events and online networking groups that focus specifically on my field. These settings have proven more conducive to relevant discussions and connections.
π‘ What has been your experience with different networking groups?
π‘ Do you have any favorite types or specific recommendations? Iβd love to hear your thoughts.
