🦃 Greetings from the Detroit Thanksgiving Parade! 🦃
12/1/2024
As I celebrate Thanksgiving in the U.S. today, I can’t help but reflect on the differences between the German Erntedankfest and American Thanksgiving. Here are the key distinctions I’ve noticed:
🦃 Origins and Significance
• Erntedankfest: A religious harvest festival with Christian roots, typically celebrated in churches.
• Thanksgiving: Commemorates the Pilgrims and Native Americans’ cooperation and is a central part of American culture.
🦃 Date and Celebration Style
• Erntedankfest: Celebrated in early October (date varies by region) with church services and harvest processions.
• Thanksgiving: A national holiday on the fourth Thursday of November, centered on family feasts, parades, and gratitude.
🦃 Food and Traditions
• Erntedankfest: Features harvest displays and traditional German foods like bread and roasted meats.
• Thanksgiving: Highlights turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, and traditions like parades and football games.
