My German family has been living in the US for 1.5 years. During this time, my 11-year-old daughter has already participated in two choir performances and one musical. As part of her regular music lessons, she has been learning to play the recorder and will soon start another instrument. She has also taken part in several art projects and clubs.
In contrast, none of the schools that I or my children attended in Germany- nor the schools I worked for during my former career as a teacher- had a school choir, let alone art clubs. It’s amazing to see that, in addition to sports, US-American schools place such a strong emphasis on arts and crafts. This is because they recognize the value of creativity and self-expression as integral parts of a child’s education, fostering both personal growth and well-rounded development.
This emphasis on arts education also plays a vital role in fostering cultural communication and competence, as it encourages children to explore diverse perspectives, express themselves creatively, and develop an appreciation for different cultures and traditions through music, art, and collaborative projects.
