Letting Go to Grow: The Power of Cultural Detachment
7/8/2025
When it comes to life coaching and relationships, coaches often tell you about the concept of detachment in order to move on.
This made me wonder:
In order to stay open-minded and thrive in a new culture, we also have to (at least to a certain degree) detach from the past and our native culture.
Only then are we truly open to new intercultural experiences.
Only then can we explore unfamiliar perspectives without prejudice, value change as an opportunity, and embrace otherness as something precious and enriching.
Detachment doesnโt mean forgetting where we come from or losing our roots.
It means loosening the grip of expectations, routines, and norms that may no longer serve us in a new environment.
Itโs about making space for growth, curiosity, and genuine connection across cultures.
