My family's trip through the Southwest of the USA last week ended in Las Vegas. It was my first time in Vegas, and what can I say? I was absolutely impressed by the city's vibrant energy, the stunning mix of architectural styles, the diversity of people we encountered, and the endless entertainment possibilities in this dazzling, larger-than-life place.

Gambling in the USA is a big deal. I first realized this years ago when I lived in the U.S. as an exchange student in New Jersey. As a high school senior, my classmates would constantly talk about how they couldn’t wait to turn 21- not just to finally be able to drink alcohol but also to visit the casinos in Atlantic City, the East Coast’s gambling paradise. To me, this fascination seemed both awkward and strange at the time.

Gambling is deeply rooted in US-American culture, though its legal status varies by state. It is also a crucial economic driver, generating billions of dollars in gross revenue and tax income each year. The American Gaming Association, a major industry trade group, represents a sector that employs around 1.7 million people across 40 states.

From a cultural perspective, casinos and everything that comes with them embody the US-American ideals of maximum entertainment and self-indulgence. Unlike in many European cultures, US-Americans tend to be more open to risk-taking, viewing gambling not just as a pastime but as an exciting chance to test their luck- and potentially win big.

While many engage in it responsibly as part of the broader entertainment industry, others see it as a symbol of the American Dream, where bold risks can lead to great rewards. This willingness to take chances and embrace extravagance is reflected in the dazzling allure of Las Vegas, where visitors are encouraged to indulge, let loose, and fully immerse themselves in the city’s electrifying atmosphere.
